Do you have any killer apps on your iPhone? I’m not referring to Vicinity, Wikipanion or Twitterific, all three of which I consider to be essential applications for any iPhone. No, I’m referring a handful of iPhone apps that quite literally kill your iPhone.
Here’s how it goes. You install your new app, it freezes causing you to force quit the iPhone. Next time you boot up you’re either presented with the Silver Apple Logo of Death or none of your 3rd party apps will launch! The only solution is to completely restore your iPhone back to factory settings using iTunes, a lengthy and hugely frustrating experience, especially if even a restore leaves the iPhone completely unstable.
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if it’s the 3rd party application that kills the iPhone or the way the iPhone deals with the force quit. However, I do know that there appears to be a solution.
The ulimate solution is for Apple to deal with this nastiness at the OS level, which it appears they will on Friday with the 2.1 update. However in the meantime, if you’re experiencing killer app troubles you might like to try the following;
Deauthorize Computer from your iTunes account. Log Out of the iTunes Store. Quit iTunes. Restart iTunes. Authorize Computer again (iTunes). Completely Restore your dead iPhone (Do not restore from a Back Up). Log In to the iTunes Store. Sync your freshly restored iPhone (Probably best not to reinstall any newly purchased apps just in case!)
This solution has worked for me, I’ve had no problems at all since Sunday evening.
