The main focus of this site is (hopefully) informed commentary, and news we’ve unearthed ourselves. We also like to provide you with in-depth reviews. But, being a mostly volunteer-run site, there’s not enough time to review everything that comes through the door, and personally I have quite a backlog of apps to look at.
So in a series of posts, I’m going to have a quick look at apps that I’ve promised developers I’ll review – ones that I’m reviewing because I thought they are interesting, and either highlighted how powerful the iPhone platform is, or just made me smile.
I’ve already looked at Pixi, Orbital and CalenGoo, and SPB Brain Evolution, iDroidsMania and Copy Share.
For the last in this series of posts, we have Phaze, International Athletics, and MouthOff.
Phaze
It’s Wipe Out on your iPhone. Do I need to say any more? Awesome.
Accelerometer-based control. Single races and Championships. 10 vehicles and 16 tracks available. These are unlocked as you progress. Difficulty levels from Easy through to Extreme. Offensive and defensive power-ups on each track.
You know what I’m talking about. I’ve lost quite a few hours to this game

International Athletics
Here’s another one from the old school. Remember Daley Thompson’ Decathlon on the C64 and ZX Spectrum? Frantic bashing of rubbery keys to see how quickly you could run the 100m, anyone?
Well, International Athletics is as close as you’re going to get – only with vastly improved 3D graphics.
Showing off the games power of the the iPhone, this is a port from the PSP. There are Tournament, Decathlon and Quick Event modes, with Rookie, Pro and Advanced difficulty levels. The events available are:
100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m, 110m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m, and Hammer.
When I’ve played this game I’ve enjoyed it. I haven’t played this game much though. You know why? Check out my Shot Put performance:
Damn. I still suck at this game! Pretty good fun though.

MouthOff
The App Store is flooded with iPhone apps that are rip offs of other apps. But MouthOff is unique. It features 45 cartoon mouths – you simply hold up your iPhone to your mouth, and the mouth will speak when you speak.
Even Simon Cowell can appreciate it:
Why do I love the app? It’s stupidly entertaining. Both the grandchildren and the grandparents get a kick out of it. Recommended.
(Don’t forget you’ll need a microphone attached if you want to use it with an iPod touch).
